The first Spanish period at Pensacola lasted from 1698 to 1719. The settlement was known as the Presidio Santa María de Galve and was led by Don Andrés de Arriola. At the center of the presidio was Fort San Carlos de Austria, designed by Austrian engineer Jaime Franck.
