The Bluffs

"The Bluffs" is a popular term used to describe the red clay cliffs that face east over Escambia Bay, and are located just east of Scenic Highway at Summit Boulevard. They were created during an unusual shift in the earth's crust during the last ice age. They were first mentioned in writing in 1559 by the crew of Don Tristan DeLuna as he sailed into the bay. It has long been a favorite fishing and sunbathing spot. In 1985, a boardwalk was constructed that leads down to the railroad tracks that run adjacent to the bay. In that same year, a parking lot was also added. Every Easter, or Passover Sunday, a sunrise Christian service is performed there.
