Born in Berkeley, California, Rubardt was a Bruno Walter fellow at [[Wikipedia:the Juilliard School|the Juilliard School]], where he received a [[Wikipedia:Doctor of Musical Arts|D.M.A.]] in orchestral conducting. He was a [[WIkipedia:Fulbright Program|Fulbright scholar]] in 1984, studying at the [[Wikipedia:Vienna Academy of Music|Vienna Academy of Music]] and later at the [[Wikipedia:Tanglewood Music Center|Tanglewood Music Center]] and the [[Wikipedia:Los Angeles Philharmonic|Los Angeles Philharmonic]] Institute.
