Outzen grew up in Greenville, Miss. - a place, he once wrote <ref>Outzen, Rick. [http://inweekly.net/wordpress/?p=9821 "Outtakes 5/10/2012 - Why we exist."] The Independent News. May 10, 2012.</ref>, known for two things: "cotton and its daily newspaper." The young Outzen would later draw inspiration from Hodding Carter, II - the editor and publisher of Greenville's "Delta Democratic Times." Hodding was an intrepid opponent of segregation in the years following World War II.
