Whitehead lost his bid for re-election in the Republican primary election held on [[August 26]], [[2008]].
On January 27, 2012, it was announced by the [[Pensacola News Journal]] that Mike Whitehead had prefiled to run for [[Escambia County Tax Collector]] in the 2012 General Election. He would be running against incumbent [[Janet Holley]], who has been the Tax Collector since 1998.
