Story earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Alabama Birmingham. She began her career in 1982 as a nuclear engineer. She was named "Alumnus of the Year" by UAB's School of Business in 2002, the same year she was named one of the "top 10 women in business" by the ''Birmingham Business Journal''.<ref>"Gulf Power picks first woman to take utility's helm." Story serves on the boards of directors of Enterprise Florida, the Florida Council of 100, Florida Chamber of Commerce, Florida's Great Northwest Economic Development Council, [[Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce]] and numerous other organizations. She was appointed to the [[Community Maritime Park Associates]] board, but resigned in [[2008]] after the appointment of her subordinate, [[Bentina Terry]], to avoid a potential violation of Florida's [[Sunshine Law]].<ref>"Story resigns from park board." She is married to Dr. [[Joseph Story]].
