Brownsville is a neighborhood on the west side of Pensacola. It is named for Lucius Screven Brown, who is responsible for the first housing development in the area, seven blocks bounded by Pace Boulevard, Strong Street, W Street and Gadsden Street. Centered around Mobile Highway, the formerly-bustling area suffered from the arrival of I-10 in the late-70s. In recent years it has attracted a reputation as a safe haven for criminal activity, including drugs and prostitution.
