The third Spanish period of Pensacola history took place between 1781 and 1821. It began with the Siege of Pensacola, when Bernardo de Gálvez triumphed over British forces, and ended with the Adams-Onís Treaty that ceded Spanish Florida to the United States. Spanish sovereignty was interrupted in 1818 when Andrew Jackson invaded the city and established an American provisional government that lasted into the next year.
