William Hazard Northup was a sea captain and businessman who served as Mayor of Pensacola.
Early life[edit]
Northup ran away to sea at an early age and by the age of 21 was captain of a coastwise schooner. Northup was acquainted with E. E. Saunders in New England; Saunders moved to Pensacola in 1868 and Northup followed in the early 1870s.[2]
In Pensacola[edit]
After settling in Pensacola, Northup established a livery and undertaking business under the name Northup and Wood.
In 1897, Northup and others organized the Pensacola Electric Terminal Railway Company to take over the assets of the Pensacola Terminal Company and operate the Pensacola streetcar system.
Northup, a Republican, was elected Mayor of Pensacola in 1897 and served through 1898.
In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Northup Collector of Customs at the Port of Pensacola. The next president, William Howard Taft, appointed Northup Postmaster.
Before his death, Northup sold his undertaking business to T. M. Lloyd.
Personal life[edit]
Northup married his friend E. E. Saunders' sister Harriet. The couple had a son, Edwin Saunders Northup.
The Northup home at 203 West Gregory Street was restored and operates as the Pensacola Victorian Bed & Breakfast.
