A native of St. Petersburg, Florida, Bonfield received a bachelor's degree in accounting from St. Leo University, after which he was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1977.<ref>[http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/draft/draft.jsp?year=1977 1977 Draft – June Regular Phase]</ref> He went on to earn an MBA from the University of South Florida.
