Susan E. Thompson was a Pensacola woman who witnessed her ex-husband, J. T. Carter, killed at the hands of her new husband in a December 21, 1889 street fight. Thompson had been married to Carter eight years prior, but she divorced him on the grounds that he could not properly support her. She remarried to grocer J. M. Thompson in 1889.

On the day of the fight, Carter brushed by the couple on the street, calling Susan "a very objectionable epithet" as he passed. Her new husband objected, and the two men fought. As Susan tried to separate the men, her husband stabbed Carter through the jugular vein and right lung, spurting blood onto her face. Carter died from the wounds, and Thompson was arrested.

Susan continued to operate the grocery, at the corner of Gregory and Cevallos Streets, after her husband's incarceration.
