Sluggo's

Sluggo's is a vegan café, bar, and music venue, located in Brownsville at 2403 West Cervantes Street.

The club was established by Terry Johnson in 1988 as Victor Hugo's. The name was changed to Sluggo's in 1990. (Sluggo is a character from the Nancy comic strip. He is a poor boy from the "wrong side of the tracks.")

For many years, Sluggo's was located at 130 South Palafox Street (at the northeast corner of Palafox and Intendencia Streets), but were forced to leave the building in 2000. Johnson cited hostility from their landlord and from the Downtown Improvement Board that led to the eviction.[1] After being closed for several years, Sluggo's reopened at their current location (site of the old Caribbean Market) in 2004.
