Sluggo's is a vegan café, bar, and music venue, located in Brownsville at 2403 West Cervantes Street.

History

The club was established by Terry Johnson in 1988 as Victor Hugo's. The name was changed to Sluggo's in March 1990, when Nick Flynn joined as a partner. (Sluggo is a character from the Nancy comic strip. He is a poor boy from the "wrong side of the tracks.")

Originally located at 319 North Tarragona Street (now the HandleBar), the club moved to Intendencia Street in 1993 and again to 130 South Palafox Street in 1995. It left the Palafox location in June 2000, citing rising rent from the building's landlord, who wanted to bring in new businesses, and hostility from the Downtown Improvement Board.[1] In 2002 Johnson announced plans for a new complex called "The Lost City" at 1602 West Garden Street, a "punk rock mall" of which Sluggo's would be a part,[2] but the project fell through.

After being closed for several years, Sluggo's reopened at their current location (site of the old Caribbean Market) on June 7, 2004, with Will Oldham performing.[3]

On November 28, 2009, Sluggo's had the grand opening of their second location, "Sluggo's North Vegetarian Cafe" at 501 Cherokee Blvd in Chatanooga, TN.
