Wells became the City Attorney in July [[2008]], after serving as an Assistant City Attorney for the previous 23 years. Prior to joining the City Attorney's Office, Wells operated a private practice in Pensacola for 5 years, and previously served for 10 years as Assistant General Counsel to the [[Wikipedia:National Association for the Advancement of Colored People|National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)]] in New York City.
