Pensacola Shakespeare Theatre, also known as PenShakes, was founded in 2009 by a group of theatre professionals and others committed to bringing a professional theatre to the Pensacola Bay area. Led by Artistic Director Kevin P. Kern, PenShakes aims to provide Northwest Florida with a communal experience that will enlighten, inspire, and facilitate dialogue within and among the members of the diverse community of Northwest Florida, using texts both classical and modern.

The company's first production was a fundraiser, on May 13, 2010. PenShakes brought in TV and stage stars Julia Duffy and Jerry Lacy for a performance of A.R. Gurney's play "Love Letters."
