Wu is a Professor Emeritus at the [[University of West Florida]]. In [[1998]], Wu helped create the Pensacola Center for Creative Community Solutions, a diverse group of residents who functioned as a "think tank" to seek nonviolent ways of dealing with community problems. In [[2002]], Florida Governor Jeb Bush appointed Wu to a four-year term of the Florida Commission on Human Relations. Wu is a longtime Rotarian, active with the [[Pensacola Five Flags Rotary]], and was elected a Paul Harris Fellow in [[1998]]. Wu is very active in community service, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, Loaves and Fishes, and the Salvation Army.

He also serves on the Florida-Alabama TPO, the [[West Florida Regional Planning Council]], and he is the Legislative Vice-chair of the [[North West Florida League of Cities]]. During his candidacy for Council in 2004, Wu was endorsed by four former mayors of Pensacola: [[Eugene Elebash]], [[Warren Briggs]], [[Vince Whibbs]], and [[Jerry Maygarden]].  Wu defeated three others for the seat, obtaining 51.51% of the vote, thus avoiding the need for a run-off.
