Penton was born in September, 1893, in Seminole, Alabama; he relocated with his parents to Beulah at the age of one. Before entering law enforcement, Penton worked as a grocer and as chief of the special service department for the Pensacola Shipbuilding Company.

CareerEdit

In June 1923, the City of Pensacola appointed Penton as Chief of Police. In October of the same year, Florida Governor Cary A. Hardee appointed Penton as Escambia County Sheriff. Voters elected Penton sheriff in 1924, and he won re-elected in 1928.

Personal lifeEdit

Penton married Allie May Burch on September 9, 1917. The couple had two sons, Douglas and Kenneth. The family lived at 1216 East Lee Street in Pensacola's East Hill neighborhood, underscoring Penton's strong connection to the community he served.
