Passing motorists would stop under the canopy and indicate to an attendant (using hand signals shown in relief on the building's exterior) how much ice they wanted.
The building (which still stands at 2024 North Davis HighwayStreet) is notable for its design by Steven Fulgham featuring stucco "icicles" a polar bear sculpture on the roof. It is one of the only remaining examples of vernacular roadside commercial architecture in Pensacola and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 1983.
