Charles McKenzie Oerting founded McKenzie Oerting & Company, a ship chandlery and grocery. He came to America in 1863, and established the business in 1886; it was later operated by successive generations of the family until it closed in 1971.

Around the turn of the century, Oerting also served as vice-consul for both Denmark and Sweden.
