Carissa is the adopted daughter of Ronald and Faye Borders. She graduated from [[Tate High School]] in 1985, received a bachelor of arts degree in communication from the [[University of West Florida]] and a master's degree in guidance counseling from the University of Memphis. She taught at [[Bellview Elementary School]] and headed the [[HOSTS]] mentoring program for students with reading disabilities. She currently works for Pensacola NAS as a School Liaison for military families. She and her husband Gary adopted their first child from a Russian orphanage in 2002.
