Quickly entering the Netherlandsship chandlery business, he owned two launches (the Alberta and the Florida) used for loading larger ships in the Bay.  In 1908 he stood for election as Pensacola Harbor Master but lost. He served as chairman of the City of Pensacola's Board of Public Works under Mayor Charles H. Bliss, and as a City Judge. He was a charter member of the Pensacola Yacht Club and of the Knight of Pythias Lodge.
