Jones grew up in rural northeast Alabama and graduated third in his class with an advanced diploma from Douglas High School. He attended the University of Montevallo with and earned a Bachelor in Music Education, cum laude, having received an academic scholarship, as well as a music scholarship, and he was honored as the Senior Elite in Music Education. At UM, he studied saxophone and oboe with Dr. Lori Ardovino and was the 1999-2000 male College Night Leader for the Purple Side.
