John W. Mathis is a former Chief of the Pensacola Police Department.
A native of Pensacola, Mathis began his career as an officer with the Pensacola Police Department in 1978. He was promoted to sergeant in 1984, lieutenant in 1988, captain in 1997, and chief in March of 2002.
In addition to being a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy, Mathis has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University. He has also attained specialized training through the U.S. Secret Service, SWAT Commanders School, and Drug Unit Commanders School.
Chief Mathis is on the board of directors of the Community Drug and Alcohol Council, is chairman of the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee, and is a member of the Juvenile Assessment Center Governing Board.
