In [[2006]], Hunter announced he would donate $1 million for the construction of a concert shell as part of the [[Community Maritime Park]] project. He is a member of the [[Pensacola Symphony Orchestra]] board and active in the [[Republican Party]]. He helped found two charter schools in Pensacola.

==Accusations of racism==
In May 2007, Hunter was accused of attempting to block the sale of a home in his neighborhood to a black man, [[Arthur Rocker]]. Hunter allegedly contacted several neighbors in the [[Bayshore Drive]] area and asked them to purchase a stake in the $400,000 [[Seamarge Circle]] property. These attempts had been brought to Rocker's attention by his Realtor, [[Dick Carr]].<ref name="racism"/>
