As a young man he entered the owner employment of [[S. S. Harvey]], [[Wikipedia:Carriage|carriage]] manufacturer, and in [[1884]] became a partner in Harvey's business. In [[1887]] he founded his own firm, the [[J. M. Hilliard Carriage Company]], which manufactured, sold, and repaired carriages. Hilliard was an organizer and president of the [[Workingmen's Building and Loan Association]]. ==Death==Hilliard fell ill with [[Wikipedia:typhoid fever|typhoid fever]] in late May 1902 and became bedridden.
