<div>Flounder's, est. 1979 is a Pensacola Beach seafood restaurant owned by Martin.<br />
It is known for it's memorable facade, chowder, and fresh seafood. <br />
<br />
Adjoining to the restaurant is the iconic M/V FLOUNDER 55’ length, 6’ draft, and 20’ beam, 30 tons net weight; built by D. C. Beaux Shipbuilders, Meraux, Louisiana and commissioned in Bayou La Batre, Alabama in 1946. Captain Frank Flounder and later his sons, Fred, Floyd and Felix, shrimped this vessel from Key West, Florida to Tampico, Mexico thru calm seas, tropical storms and fierce hurricanes until she was retired in 1998. This grand old shrimp boat is complete with nets, sleds, mast and rigging.<br />
<br />
==Displays==<br />
The Marlin Bar showcases a 980lb, blue marlin, a USGFA World Record catch by Warren Culbertson, a noted Gulf Coast Angler. Atop Flounder’s stage you’ll find the original sailfish sign that lit the way to Santa Rosa Island since the 50’s. Flounder's also displays a Man Eating Giant Clam. This shell was displaced outside of the Allen Davis Shell Shop in Gulf Breeze from 1948-2004, when the store closed to make way for the Publix Shopping Center. <br />
On Flounder’s Beach you will find an actual 15-foot Cuban raft, with a Russian built engine, which carried 27 Cuban refugees 85 miles across the Gulf from Cuba to Key West in 1988.<br />

John David "Roy" Atchison (1954-2007) was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Florida who was arrested on September 16, 2007 at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport in an Internet sex sting organized by the Macomb County Sheriff's Office and the FBI. He had allegedly flown to Michigan with the intent of having sex with a 5-year-old girl. Atchison committed suicide while in detention on October 5, 2007.<br />
<br />
==Arrest==<br />
Profiles created by Atchison on MySpace and Yahoo! Groups, using the nickname "fldaddy04" and describing himself as an "Experienced, understanding Daddy," drew the attention of the sting operation. He was contacted via instant message on August 29 by undercover officers posing as a mother willing to offer her 5-year-old daughter for sex. In daily conversations with the officers, Atchison described several graphic sexual acts he wished to perform with the fictitious girl. According to the affidavit, these included "oral and vaginal sex, as well as sodomy." He suggested the mother tell the girl that "you found her a sweet boyfriend who will bring her presents." When he was asked about possible physical injury to the young girl, Atchison allegedly responded, "I am always gentle and loving; not to worry, no damage ever, no rough stuff ever. I only like it soft and nice. … Just gotta go slow and very easy. I've done it plenty." At the time of his arrest at the Detroit airport, he had in his possession a Dora the Explorer doll, hoop earrings and petroleum jelly.<br />
<br />
A not guilty plea was entered on Atchison's behalf to the following three charges:<br />
*Attempted enticement of a minor using the Internet, which carries a potential 30-year sentence.<br />
*Aggravated sexual abuse, another potential 30-year sentence.<br />
*Traveling across state lines to have sex with someone under 12, a charge added on September 18 which carries a potential life sentence.<br />
<br />
On September 20, Atchison attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself with a bed sheet, but was stopped by guards at the Sanilac County Jail where he was being detained. Despite being transferred to a Milan federal detention facility under suicide watch, he was found unresponsive in his cell on the morning of October 5, apparently from hanging himself. He was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m.<br />
<br />
==Family & career==<br />
Prior to his arrest, Atchison lived in Gulf Breeze with his wife Barbara, a teacher at Gulf Breeze High School, and their three children. He attended the University of Florida and received his law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1986 and has worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Pensacola since the late 1980s, handling mostly asset forfeitures.<br />
<br />
He was also president of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association (GBSA), a youth sports organization. Vice president Mike Mabry told the Pensacola News Journal, "Honestly, we're trying to put this behind us. Our goal is to be here for the kids. This is the last thing the kids need. We will move forward." Responding to concerns stemming from the comment, "I've done it plenty," Gulf Breeze Police Chief Peter Paulding assured residents the department had received no local complaints against Atchison. However, the Detroit office of the FBI will investigate his involvement with the GBSA.<br />
<br />
==Community reaction==<br />
Atchison was a longtime friend of Gulf Breeze City Manager, Edwin "Buz" Eddy, who said after the arrest that he hoped the charges were the result of a misunderstanding. "Before reading about this, I would have trusted him with my wife and kids."<br />
<br />
After Atchison committed suicide, U.S. Attorney Greg Miller released a statement saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Roy’s family and friends. We hope that with the passage of time, they can find some measure of healing." Gulf Breeze Major Lane Gilchrist told reporters, "The only concern I have at this point is the family and that they be able to lead some kind of normal life. It still flabbergasts me that this whole thing happened. I really don’t know what to say about it.”<br />

The 17th Avenue railroad trestle (more commonly called graffiti bridge) is a concrete bridge that carries the CSX railroad over a two-lane span of 17th Avenue near its terminus at Pensacola Bay. It is well-known for the copious amounts of (mostly good-natured) graffiti that cover its surface at any given time. It is also known for the occasional collision with large trucks whose drivers do not heed the clearance warnings.<br />
<br />
According to local lore, motorists will receive good luck if they honk their horn while driving under the bridge. <br />
The Pensacola News Journal reported on June 12, 2007 that the Oak Point development, just southwest of the bridge, has experienced graffiti-related vandalism on its privacy wall and, more recently, on a house under construction.) Event planners initially hoped the City of Pensacola would contribute $150,000 of the $700,000 cost, but the City Council demurred by a 5-4 vote, citing budget restraints.<br />

He has served on the Escambia Board of County Commissioners since his election to this board in November of 2016, where he defeated his Democratic opponent in that election by a margin of 69% to 31%. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Board during his first year on the board, and as Chairman of the Board from 2018-2019. Bergosh is currently a candidate for the Escambia Board of County Commissioner District 1 seat for the 2020 election, where he has two opponents in his race. =="Godzilla" controversy==<br />
On October 4, 2007, the Pensacola News Journal published an article by reporter Sara Rabb that revealed Bergosh had been posting comments on the pnj.com forums under the pseudonym "Godzilla." Rabb purportedly noticed that "Godzilla's" posts were similar to the views expressed by Bergosh at School Board meetings, and she was able to confirm with the website's administrator that Bergosh's personal email address had indeed been used to register the account. Rabb requested an interview with Bergosh on October 2, 2007, to discuss teacher salaries and merit pay. At the interview, Rabb confronted Bergosh with her findings and indicated that the News Journal wanted to run a story on the pseudonym. Bergosh admitted he was Godzilla during the interview, but then issued an official statement "unequivocally denying" the alter-ego. He has claimed this initial admission was made to Rabb "off the record." Bergosh officially confirmed the online identity during an October 8 "IN Your Head Radio" interview on AM 1620.<br />
<br />
Bergosh was criticized in subsequent News Journal editorials for a number of the comments he made as Godzilla, which included:<br />
*a claim that schools in the lower-income District 3 were a statistical "drag" on the district's performance. <br />
*a suggestion that governments should "do away with compulsory education beyond grade 8. … Build more prisons and get ready for the influx, but let's keep school a positive environment for students who WANT to come to school!!"<br />
*criticism of teachers' unions for "roadblocking districts every step of the way" in a debate over teacher merit pay. In the same debate, Bergosh (as Godzilla) complimented himself in the third person: "I know we can count on Board member Bergosh to be there and vote to keep the bonus money here in Pensacola. I know he is not going to genuflect, bow down and kiss the union ring, and give the union what they want." When the School Board voted 4-1 against the existing merit pay plan, Godzilla said he could hear their "spines breaking in unison."<br />
<br />
===Reaction & aftermath===<br />
Bergosh accused the News Journal of "outing" his identity on what he had believed was a safe outlet for anonymous opinion: "When the Pensacola News Journal created an anonymous forum, encouraging the use of pseudonyms, as to let people take down their guards and speaking in a frank manner regarding political ideas and thoughts, I jumped at the opportunity." The publication pointed out that their website's current terms of use reserved "the right to identify you as the author of any of your postings or submissions by name, email address or screen name, as we deem appropriate," although this policy may have been altered since Bergosh initially registered.fact Bergosh asserted that he "never divulged any 'in-house' secrets or committed ANY crime" and that the left-leaning newspaper had engaged in "yellow journalism" as retribution for his conservative opinions, prompting him to "fight for my right to freedom of speech."<br />

<br />
The News Journals decision to share details of their website registration database with the editorial staff was criticized by many members of the pnj.com forums and by other publications. According to the UWF Voyager, "A bias was inherent in that story — the bias to sell more newspapers." The online editor for the Northwest Florida Daily News decried the exposé as "bush league."<br />
<br />
Hostilities continued when the News Journal held a contest asking readers to submit captions for a cartoon of Bergosh wearing a Godzilla costume. (The winning caption said, "All the School Board costumes were taken!") Bergosh countered by offering alternate captions critical of the newspaper's online policy (for example, "Deception <u>is</u> at the core of '<u>anonymous</u>' blogs!!") and drawing a caricature of editor Dick Schneider:<br />

What a strange October this has been!! … So I put together my own little “cartoon contest”— knowing I have nowhere near the resources, time, nor the “need” to create news at the level of the PNJ. But, this is still rather humorous, in my opinion. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Board during his first year on the board, and as Chairman of the Board from 2018-2019. During his time on the Board of County Commissioners, he has focused on Economic Development and Job creation as well as managing growth in his community in a more intelligent fashion. He created the first Escambia Youth Commission in 2019, and he has made it a priority to engage the public via monthly coffee meetings as well as frequent town hall meetings. Bergosh is currently a candidate for the Escambia Board of County Commissioner District 1 seat for the 2020 election, where he has two opponents in his race. Prior to his time on the Board of County Commissioners, he was the Escambia County School Board representative for District 1. He was elected in 2006, filling the seat vacated by his brother Gary Bergosh, who won a Circuit Court judgeship in the same election. Bergosh was elected unopposed in 2014 to the school board.<br />
<br />
He came under fire in 2007 for posting controversial comments on the pnj.com message boards under the pseudonym Godzilla. His identity was revealed against his wishes in a News Journal story, which cited the website's registration database as proof, sparking discussions of both political and journalistic ethics. "Off the record" conversations between Bergosh and PNJ reporter Sara Rabb were also leaked in the "outing" of Bergosh. This conduct was rebuked in a subsequent media article on the topic.
<br />
<br />
===Reaction & aftermath===<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<blockquote>These PNJ guys have had me on the front page twice, 4 editorials, and the “cartoon” has been up for 2 weeks!! These guys have given me more coverage this last month than Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or their #1 hero, Al Gore, inventor of the internet and recent Nobel Peace Prize winner!! What a strange October this has been!! … So I put together my own little “cartoon contest”— knowing I have nowhere near the resources, time, nor the “need” to create news at the level of the PNJ. But, this is still rather humorous, in my opinion. I asked around town, at the Waterfront Rescue Mission, at UWF, At Happy Hour, and at my Mensa club meeting-- and came up with quite a few ideas for the caption, with the one in the final cartoon being deemed “the winner.”</blockquote><br />

Jeff Bergosh is currently the Escambia County Commissioner for District 1. He was re-elected to the School Board in 2010, defeating two opponents (Luke Keller and Hosea Pittman) in the primary election where Bergosh captured 66% of the vote. Bergosh was elected unopposed in 2014 to the school board.<br />
<br />
Bergosh and his wife Sally have three children: Tori, Nicholas and Brandon.<br />
<br />
==Education & career==<br />
Bergosh is a 1986 graduate of Pensacola High School. After high school, he moved out west to attend college, earning an Associates of Arts degree from Grossmont College (El Cajon, California) in 1990 and a B.A. from San Diego State University in 1994. Bergosh has earned a Master of Science in Administration from the University of West Florida. Before entering politics, Bergosh had a ten-year career as a retail business operator and facilities management specialist, including about 1 1/2 years working at Naval Air Station Pensacola. He has claimed this initial admission was made to Rabb "off the record." Bergosh officially confirmed the online identity during an October 8 "IN Your Head Radio" interview on AM 1620.<br />
<br />
<br />
===Reaction & aftermath===<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
His cartoon depicted Schneider outside a "House of Voodoo" sticking pins into a Godzilla doll and yelling, "MOMMY!! Your <u>dumb</u> idea is <u>not</u> WORKING!!"<br />

<div><br />
Trader Jon's was a bar in downtown Pensacola that was a popular destination for officers and aviators stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola.<br />
<br />
==Origins==<br />
Trader Jon's was founded by Martin "Trader Jon" Weissman and his wife Jackii on January 1, 1953. Trader was a World War II army paratrooper who was honorably discharged for an ankle injury before being deployed to Europe. The couple had previously operated bars in Miami and Key West before moving to Pensacola.<br />
<br />
The bar's location at 511 South Palafox Street (now known as the Trader Jon's building) dates back to 1896 and was previously occupied by such tenants as Samuel Charles's shoe repair shop and Birgar Testman's ship chandlery. It was already a bar when Weissman purchased it.<br />
As of 2021, it houses 5eleven palafox event hosting.<br />
<br />
==Naval hangout==<br />
<br />
The bar was widely known for the eccentricities of its owner. Weissman did not set prices for drinks; rather, they varied depending on his mood and how well he knew the customer. This practice was often referred to as "Tradernomics." He was known for wearing mismatched socks and offered a reward to any patron who caught him in a matching pair. He also exchanged drinks for bits of Navy memorabilia, which led to the bar's signature collection and helped reinforce his "Trader" moniker.<br />
<br />
<br />
Trader Jon's was the basis of the fictional club "TJ's" in the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman, which was inspired by the Officer Candidate School at NAS Pensacola.<br />
<br />
With such an extensive collection of Naval Aviation paraphernalia, Trader Jon's become a haven, not just for Naval aviators, but for aviation enthusiasts from all over the world. Weissman developed a tour that he gave visitors, where he pointed out pieces that he was particularly fond of such as the Tailhook rhinoceros. In the course, of the tour he also made several claims that could never quite be verified but he told them with such sincerity that it was impossible to think that they might be anything other than true. For example, he always told people that a musty saddle was a gift from John Wayne and that Trader Jon's was in the Guinness book of World Records for "the largest Civilian collection of Naval Aviation Paraphernalia (which if it wasn't, it perhaps should have been.) <br />
<br />
The Blue Angel Museum that he opened in the annex next to the main bar, was his pride and joy. Not only did it feature composite pictures of the team for years back, but it also featured pictures of the Blue Angels all the way back to the teams inception. The room was also used to host special events, the biggest of which was the party that followed the Blue Angels' Homecoming show in November every year.<br />
<br />
Among the celebrities to visit Trader Jon's were Prince Andrew, John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor and Bob Hope. In May 1986, Weissman was featured in Hope's birthday special, taped aboard the USS Lexington.<br />
<br />
In March 1991, two 19-year-old women, Cary Higgins and Tonya Corrado, were killed in an car accident after drinking at Trader Jon's. Then son in-law, Steve Hammill was serving the two young women through out the night. Higgins, and Corrado were both frequent customers and were given permission to enter underage from Weissman himself knowing the girls were not of age, as Cary Higgins had once worked as his employee and was known by the other employees. Cary Higgins was the only daughter of a Naval Officer. She was also survived by her Mother, brother, and her young daughter. In July 1992, Weissman was fined $1,000 by the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco for serving alcohol to the underage women, and the bar closes for 18 days. In December 1995 Weissman settled a lawsuit with the families of the two women for an undisclosed amount.<br />
<br />
The Trader Jon's building was designated an historic site by the State of Florida in 1992.<br />
<br />
==Changing hands==<br />
Trader Jon's closed in 1998, a year after Weissman suffered a debilitating stroke that kept him from work; he died on February 18, 2000. A group called the "Trader Jon's Preservation Squadron," led by former Blue Angels leader Bob Stumpf and Marine Corps Major Kent Bolin, raised $300,000 to preserve the bar and its contents as a restaurant and a kind of museum. Their purchase offer was rejected by Weissman's family, who wanted to see the club remain open.<br />
<br />
Navy flight instructor Matt Heckemeyer and his wife Kerry purchased the business for $465,000 on August 8, 2000. After spending an estimated $150,000 on renovations, they reopened the bar on September 1 of that year — what would have been Weissman's 85th birthday.<br />
<br />
The Heckemeyer's hired Mientje Green as the general manager. Green had previously managed the famous Tipitina's club in New Orleans with her husband Jim. They planned to cater to a wider clientele by making Trader Jon's a live music venue. ""We're thinking about blues, Cajun, zydeco, jazz, Green said. "We want to give the people something different and something they'll support.<br />
<br />
On January 16, 2001, a fire erupted in the "Blue Angels Museum" portion of the building, but was quickly extinguished with minor damage.<br />
<br />
==Closure & legacy==<br />
The bar closed for good on November 9, 2003. Matt Heckemeyer, who had divorced from his wife since buying the bar, was at a loss to pinpoint the exact reason why the bar went under; however, many in the Navy Community, who saw Trader Jon's in its heyday, suspected it had "a lot to do with the changing environment" of a Navy that frowned upon excessive drinking.<br />
<br />
The Trader Jon's building was sold for $562,500 to Sarah and Walter Brown, who planned to expand their women's boutique Sarah's into the space — months before Hurricane Ivan destroyed the store's main location in the adjacent Phenix Building — but these plans were later scrapped.<br />
<br />
The collection of Navy memorabilia, appraised at approximately $2 million, was purchased by law firm Aylstock Witkin & Sasser and donated to the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. It will be featured in the Admiral John H. Fetterman State of Florida Maritime Museum and Research Center. Before his death, Admiral Fetterman stated his desire to see the "Trader Jon's" name return in the form of the museum's restaurant.<br />

<br />
Born on November 19, 1928, at the old Sacred Heart Hospital, he lived 73 full years with vibrancy, humor, and the love and respect of all he knew. David was a lifelong resident of Pensacola. He went to grade school, and worked summers with his father at L & L Pawn Shop, and at the Pensacola Beach Casino.<br />
<br />
David graduated from Pensacola High School at the age of fifteen, and went on to receive his undergraduate degree in economics from Duke University in 1949, and graduated number two in his law school class from the University of Florida in 1952. <br />
<br />
After law school, Mr. Levin enlisted in the United Staes Air Force as a Basic Airman, and spent a year in Korea, eventually rising to the rank of Captain. After service in Korea, he began his own practice in Pensacola, soon partnering with his life-long friend, Reubin Askew, who became a state legislator and eventually, a two-term Governor. <br />
The firm of Levin & Askew grew and prospered under David Levin's leadership--becoming a nationally recognized law firm of the highest caliber. Mr. Levin is listed in the current Publication 'Best Lawyers in America', and has been listed in 'Outstanding Floridians', 'Men of Achievement', 'Who's Who in the South and Southeast', and 'Who's Who in American Law'. <br />
<br />
Mr. Levin is former President of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and is Board Certified by the Florida Bar in the area of marital and family law. In 1971, Mr. Levin was appointed Chairman of the Florida Pollution Control Board (forerunner of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection), and served in that capacity until June 1974. }}<br />
Tower East is the current name of original Pensacola Hospital building (and also called the Old Sacred Heart Hospital building). It is located at 1010 North 12th Avenue.<br />
<br />
The hospital opened in September 1915 as the first Catholic hospital in Florida. The Daughters of Charity, a religious order dating back to 1633, invested over $400,000 into building and opening this facility. Evans Brothers Construction, of Birmingham, Alabama, took one year to build this late Gothic Revival building for the Daughters to provide the residents of Pensacola with better health care.<br />
<br />
This structure is both a medical and architectural landmark. Before this hospital, Pensacola had only a scattering of local clinics in converted houses. Doctors would send patients with serious cases as far away as New Orleans for complicated procedures not available in Pensacola. With this facility, Pensacola had the first surgical, radiological, bacterial, and therapeutic facilities in Florida. Following the Daughters of Charity motto of "service to all", the third level of the east wing was dedicated entirely to the Creole and colored population so that they could also receive hospital care. A. O. von Herbulis, a native of Austria who immigrated to the United States, designed the hospital. Using the vocabulary of English Gothic architecture, with elements such as the Tudor arches on the ends, the stone work around the front entrance, and the battlement at the parapet, von Herbulis created a lasting monument to health care.<br />
<br />
In 1948, following the original desire of Mother Margaret O'Keefe, Pensacola Hospital's name changed to Sacred Heart Hospital of Pensacola. In 1965, the hospital moved its operations to North Ninth Avenue. After the hospital left, a private school for Liberal Arts used the building from 1969 through 1978, but lack of maintenance forced the school to abandon the building. Tower East Group, Inc., a private enterprise owned by partners B. Neal Armstrong and Stephen F. Ritz, purchased the property in March 1980. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 16, 1982.<br />
<br />
The public areas are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, for touring. The lower levels of the building house have been restored and maintained and have housed restaurants (Madison's Diner, O'Zone Pizza Pub, Et Cafe), and a local theater company (Loblolly Theater), as well as a veterinary clinic, yoga studio, and a Montessori school, along with several private offices. The upper levels have been in disuse since the removal of Sacred Heart Hospital to N. Ninth Avenue, and are closed to the public.<br />

<div>The Robert L. Sikes Bridge, also known locally as the Pensacola Beach bridge, is a toll bridge that runs between Gulf Breeze, Florida and Pensacola Beach. It carries four lanes of State Road 399 across Santa Rosa Sound.<br />
<br />
As of June 2021, the cost of the toll is $1 per vehicle, plus a $2.50 surcharge per billing cycle when using toll-by plate. The administrative fee is waived for customers using SunPass, E-Pass, a NC Quick Pass, Peach Pass, or for tolling apps.<br />
<br />
The Santa Rosa Island Authority also offers their own annual pass, which lets you pass an unlimited number of times for a one time annual fee.<br />
<br />
=== History ===<br />
The bridge, which is dedicated to the former congressman Bob Sikes, was opened in the Mid- 1970's, replacing the aging and narrow two-lane facility to the east of the current structures.<br />
<br />
In 2020, work began on a $4.7 million rehabilitation and modernization project for the aging bridge, so keep the bridge sturdy for the remainder of its structural lifespan, as of June 1, 2021 to be estimated to be an additional 10-15 years. However, construction work continued into early 2021, due to effects of the Coronavirus pandemic, and effects of Hurricane Sally to the bridge.<br />
<br />
In March 2020, the Santa Rosa Island Authority, the operator of the toll plaza, announced that they would be switching over to cashless tolls going forward. Previously, it was protested by residents of Pensacola Beach and Gulf Breeze, notably because of the administrative surcharge they would add every month, but there was no significant backlash when they implemented it in 2020.<br />
