Joseph Forsyth was an important business man in Milton history. He was a merchant and a shipper. He initially was in area getting sandstone for use in Pensacola Wharf. In 1817 he built and operated a mill in Milton area that was in operation for about 38 years. This mill required the use of a mill pond. Water would be dammed and released to power the equipment. In the 1830's he and several partners were involved in the Arcadia Railroad Company. The railway was used to move what was produced at Arcadia mills out. As steam power became available, the mill operations were transferred to Bagdad. He tried to keep the Arcadia Mill in operation, but after his death in 1855 it was destroyed. [1]
