The City of Milton is the incorporated portion of Milton, Florida and the municipal government which administers it.

[edit] Population & demographics

As of the census of 2000,[1] there were 7,045 people, 2,674 households, and 1,831 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.1 people per square mile (622.4/km²). There were 3,151 housing units at an average density of 720.6/sq mi (278.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 77.84% White, 15.95% African American, 0.71% Native American, 1.73% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 2.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.45% of the population.

There were 2,674 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were married couples living together, 15.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,060, and the median income for a family was $34,889. Males had a median income of $30,352 versus $18,973 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,685. About 10.9% of families and 16.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.9% of those under age 18 and 16.3% of those age 65 or over.

The city limits of Milton include an area of 4.6 square miles (11.9 km²), of which 0.2 square miles (4.59%) is water, primarily from the Blackwater River, which runs east of the city, and Locklin Lake.

The city is administered by a city manager, appointed by the Milton City Council, an eight-member legislative body. The City is divided into four electoral wards, each of which elects two council members.
