Mary Ella was born on [[July 17]], [[1852]] in Pensacola to [[William Louis Shuttleworth]], a colonel in the United States Marine Corps, and [[Amanda Brosnaham Shuttleworth]].  Her mother died when she was six years old.

Mary Ella Brent died at the age of 53 of cancer of the jaw.  She is buried with her husband in [[St. Michael's Cemetery]] in Pensacola.

One of the Brent's daughters is also named Mary Ella Brent.
