Benson was born in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and moved to Pensacola, Florida in 1976. She is the daughter of Lois and Scott Benson. She is a graduate of [[Booker T. Washington High School]](1989), Dartmouth College (A.B., 1993) and the [[Fredric G. Levin College of Law]] at the University of Florida (J.D., 1996). Benson was employed as a municipal bond lawyer, prior to her appointment as Secretary of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation in December 2006. In 2008 she was appointed as Secretary of the Agency for Health Care Administration.
